Accessibility statement

Our commitment

People don't all read a screen the same way, and we build for people. Some of you are here with a keyboard and no mouse. Some with a screen reader, or a magnifier, or the text turned up, or your own colours instead of ours. This site should work for every one of you, and making sure of it is our job, not yours.

Here's how far that's true today, what still isn't, and what to do if something gets in your way. It covers every page on altnota.com.

Conformance status

There's a standard for this, WCAG 2.2, and it comes in three levels. A is the floor. AA is what accessible usually means, and what public bodies in Europe are held to. AAA is the top. altnota.com meets AA in full, on every page.

And where AAA was within reach, we took it: every word of text sits at a higher contrast than it needs, and nearly every button and link has a bigger tap area than the rules ask. No site is expected to meet all of AAA, WCAG says so itself, and we don't claim to. But we like a high mark. It's in the name.

Feedback and contact

If something on this site gets in your way, we want to know. Genuinely. Tell us what you were trying to do and what happened. If you know which browser or assistive technology you were using, add that too, it saves us a round of guessing.

You'll hear from us usually within a couple of days, always within five, with what we're going to do about it and when.

Known limitations

The ones we know about. When we find more, they go here. And if you find one before we do, that's not you, that's us, and we'd like to hear about it.

  • The two social links at the bottom of every page are small: about 20 pixels wide, where the rest of the site gives you at least 44. If small targets are hard for you to hit, those two are the hardest thing here. Every other way to reach us is bigger, and the email address on this page is the biggest.
  • There's a drawing feature hidden behind a keyboard shortcut, and it needs a mouse or a trackpad. It's a small joke, nothing on the site depends on it, and it's the one place we chose fun over the rule.

What it needs from your browser

Nothing unusual. The pages are HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript, and they still read if the JavaScript is off or never arrives. They work from a 320 pixel window upwards, at whatever text size you like, and if you've asked your system for less motion, the site keeps still.

We haven't tested every browser with every screen reader. If it fails on yours, tell us. You know your setup better than we do, and we'd rather follow your lead than guess.

About this statement

We tested the site ourselves, which is not the same as having it audited, and we'd rather say so. Automated checks on every page, then the keyboard alone, the contrast of every colour, and the whole site squeezed into a narrow window and blown up to twice its size.

Everything here describes the site as it is today, and the site keeps changing. We come back to this whenever it does, and at least once a year regardless.
